Cod Liver Oil and Psoriasis
Cod Liver Oil redices both the severity and the extent of the effects of psoriasis, by its vitamin content and because of its high levels of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs).
Vitamin A has been proven to combat psoriasis because it inhibits the formation of polamines (toxic amino acids) which are what make the skin cells reproduce so quickly.
Vitamin E improves the texture of the skin and speeds the healing process, helping to regulate the rate at which cells reproduce. It is also a powerful antioxidant, so it helps prevent the internal skin damage and can delay premature skin ageing.
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)
EPA can help to reduce inflammation by providing the material which the body needs to make prostaglandins, which are essential for healthy tissues. Prostaglandins can also be made from another fatty acid called arachidonic acid (AA), but this is more likely to cause inflammation than EPA. AA has long been implicated in the inflammation associated with psoriasis. if the body is supplied with sufficient EPA it can make prostaglandins which reduce the inflammatory effects of those made from AA.
Fish Oil may counteract one side-effect of the retinoic acid (Vitamin A) derived drugs which are sometimes used to treat sever psoriasis. These drugs can cause serum triglyceride levels to rise. In many ways triglycerides are similar to cholesterol and high levels can increase the risk of heart disease.
Omega-3s also improve blood flow by slightly thinning the blood and improving the elasticity of red blood cells. Free-flowing blood carries more oxygen to nourish the skin.
Research has concluded that in addition to the benefits of taking fish oils regularly for chronic psoriasis, concentrated EPA or DHA may be a way to alleivate the symptoms of acute psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases.
At the very least taking fish oil supplements along with drug treatment can bring about an immediate improvement in psoriasis. The side-effects of anti-cancer drugs, which are sometimes used to treat the more severe cases of psoriasis, can be blocked by also taking Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs).
